NWS Weekend Round-Up – EURO 2016 Special

13 Jun , 2016

On the weekend that the 2016 European Championship kick off, we have had plenty of action already, so let us guide you through all of the highlights from the games so far.

We’ll start at the start, and on Friday hosts France got their campaign underway with 2-1 over Romania, after Dimitri Payet had already set-up France’s first goal he then went on to grab the winner with this stunning effort.

We were lucky enough to have a few more excellent strikes on show too, Modric grabbed the winner for Croatia with this stunning strike, two goals that are already in contention for the goal of the tournament award.

But remember football’s golden rule when it comes to blocking shots, always and I mean ALWAYS make sure you hair is in place before closing down the shot, perfectly shown here:

To the home nations now and a visit to see free kick specialists Gareth Bale and Eric Dier’s (yes Eric Dier) goals. The Spurs deep lying midfielder isn’t exactly in the team for his set pieces (Neither is Harry Kane Woy, so get him in the box for corners) but when this opportunity came up he stepped up and smashed into the back of net.

Russia were down but not out and went on to nick a last minute equaliser. There was more joy for Gareth Bale though, who opened the scoring for Wales with this stunning strike:

Wales went on to secure a 2-1 over Slovakia in what was their first ever match at a Euros, that left Group B looking rather sweet for the Welsh.

In Group C Northern Ireland began with a loss after Poland managed to break down their stubborn defence, and Germany cruised past Ukraine to go top of the group. The Germans looked in complete control of the game apart from this one near miss after some outstanding heroics for Jerome Boateng on his goal line saved his side.

No, we have no idea how that didn’t go in either. We are also not sure what German Coach Joachim Low was up to on the touchline either?

That’s all from what’s been an incredible first few games at Euro 2016, keep an eye on our Twitter timeline for our Team of the Round coming up in the week and for loads more Euro news!
