TENNIS POST BUYING GUIDE

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TENNIS POSTS

Tennis is the world’s most popular racket sport and in this guide we cover everything you need to know about tennis posts. From tennis post dimensions and types to the materials used to make tennis posts and how to install them, you’ll find all the information you need prior to buying tennis posts here.

TENNIS POST DIMENSIONS

All tennis posts usually fall within similar sizes. In tennis, the regulation height of tennis posts is 3.5ft (1.07m) from the ground. This will need to be checked whilst the installation is in progress. These dimensions have been set by the ITF (International Tennis Federation). Posts should be set 42ft (12.8m) apart for a double net set up or 33ft (10.06m) for a singles net set up.

The graphic below includes all the key dimensions and measurements for tennis posts.

TYPES OF TENNIS POST

There are many different types of tennis posts available to buy to suit different needs and requirements. Whether it’s tennis post materials, shapes or fixing types, the subtle differences are important to be aware of.

Below is a breakdown that covers some of the key aspects to consider:

Tennis Post Materials

Tennis post materials can differ between venues. Depending on the primary use of the court, tennis posts will typically be one of the following materials:

Steel Tennis Posts

Many casual outdoor tennis courts prefer to use steel posts as they are affordable, strong and durable. The cons with steel posts is that they are heavier than other materials and they can be prone to rust overtime if they are not galvanised or coated. Steel tennis posts are typically popular with permanent outdoor tennis courts with high durability needs.

Aluminium Tennis Posts

Although more expensive than steel, aluminium posts are a popular choice for many venues due to them being lightweight and rust free. As they are lighter, they can be easier to install. The downside of aluminium posts is the cost as we have already mentioned, and they are slightly less durable than steel posts. Most venues use aluminium tennis posts for elite tournaments, and they are also great for temporary tennis courts.

Wooden Tennis Posts

For those feeling nostalgic, wood was the original material used to make tennis posts and is used at top venues like Wimbledon. Due to their rigid build, they are very durable and offer an exceptional performance whilst maintaining a traditional look. The downside of wooden tennis posts is that they can require maintenance and can rot over time. For those looking for a classic look (particularly for indoor courts at home or in private clubs) wooden tennis posts are a great option.

TENNIS POST FIXING TYPES

Tennis posts are available to buy in two main fixing types; fixed and freestanding.

Fixed Tennis Posts

Fixed tennis posts are secured to the ground which means they are extremely stable and secure. There are different variations of fixed tennis posts which include socketed posts with ground sleeves, bolt down tennis posts and tennis posts that are permanently cemented into the ground without ground sleeves.

  • Socketed posts are inserted into pre-installed ground sockets/sleeves. This means that they are extremely stable but can also be easily removed and/or replaced which is ideal for multi-use courts. Many professional clubs and courts use tennis posts with ground sockets.
  • Bolt down posts are secured to the ground with a base plate which means the actual posts don’t fit within the ground. They are easier to install and remove than other types of tennis socketed tennis posts, but they are also less secure.
  • Cemented posts are directly cemented into the ground without any ground sockets. Whilst this means they are extremely secure it also means that they are more difficult to remove and replace. The initial installation is also more complex and expensive.

Freestanding Tennis Posts

Freestanding or portable tennis posts are mobile tennis posts that can be easily moved. Perfect for temporary/multi-use tennis courts, the posts are typically attached to bases which have wheels. Although they are potentially less stable than fixed tennis posts, they are perfect for recreational use, multi-sports facilities such as leisure centres and schools.

Ultimately which fixing type you go for will depend on your requirements. If you want tennis posts that can be easily moved then freestanding tennis posts are for you. If you want a more permanent tennis court a fixed tennis post will be more suitable. Of the different types of fixed tennis posts you’ll need to weigh up your options and budget. Many clubs and facilities opt for socketed tennis posts as they combine the stability of cemented posts without being as permanent, making it easier to remove and replace them.

TENNIS POST INSTALLATION

If you are wondering how to install your tennis posts then we’ve included a basic breakdown below. The steps run through how to install round and square socketed tennis posts:

Step 1: Installing Sockets

As previously mentioned, sockets should be set up 42ft apart for doubles and 33ft apart for singles, tennis posts should be 3.5ft high.

A concrete block of 70cm x 70cm x 70cm minimum is recommended to hold the tennis post ground sockets in place. This block should be below ground level to allow for the sports surface.

It is recommended that tennis post sockets are installed 1-4 degrees off vertical leaning away from the net to ensure that the tennis post does not lean inwards.

Step 2: Setting Up Posts & Nets

Carefully slot the winder and anchor tennis posts into the ground sockets. Before you do this, ensure that the concrete block is holding the sockets in place. You will then need to screw the brass winder handle to the winding mechanism using the provided screws.

To attach the net, take the looped end of the nets headline wire and place this over the welded hook on the anchor post.

The winder side can be placed on the plain end of the headline wire, over the pulley wheel and down into the hole inside the brass winding mechanism. Turn the winder clockwise a few times to wrap the wire around the barrel of the winding mechanism. It is recommended to unscrew the winding mechanism away from the post to make it easier to fit the wire.

For the final touch, weave the stainless-steel lacing bars through the tennis net holes and lugs on the post. Then attach the centre net strap and turn the winder handle clockwise to tension the net. You can use a measuring gauge to ensure regulation net height.

Step 3: Maintaining Your Net

Once your net is fully set up, it is important to make sure it is maintained so it lasts. It’s important to keep the winding mechanism well-greased for smooth operation. You should also ensure the wire does not get tangled on the winder’s barrel. If it does unscrew the winder then carefully untangle the wire and fit it back into place. Do not over wind the mechanism and when the court is not in use, un-tension the net and tie it up off the ground.
