12kg Dumbbells

At Net World Sports we have a wide range of dumbbells to choose from. Our 12kg dumbbells include neoprene weights that have a non-slip, colour-coded neoprene coating over a solid cast iron core. The soft finish is comfortable to hold and protects the floor when dropped. The hexagonal shape stops the dumbbell from rolling when set down. In 12.5kg, we have pairs of dumbbells for sale in rubber hex, pro-quality urethane and polished chrome. Hardened chrome dumbbells offer a classic look and a durable, scratch-resistant finish with hill-style knurling for grip. Hex dumbbells offer great value for money, whilst urethane dumbbells are designed for commercial gyms and anyone who demands the best quality equipment. 12kg weights sit in the light to moderate part of a dumbbell range, and it is a genuinely versatile weight. For beginners, it is a solid working weight on compound exercises such as squats, bent-over rows and chest press. For isolation exercises that target smaller muscles, including lateral raises, front raises and bicep curls, 12kg is a moderate to challenging weight depending on the exercise. Women training for strength often progress to 12kg on exercise like chest press, having built up through lighter weights - usually starting with 5kg to 7kg. It is also a popular choice for HIIT, circuit training and high-rep conditioning.

12KG DUMBBELL FAQs

Can you build muscle with 12kg dumbbells?+
Yes, as part of a personalised training programme, most people can build muscle with 12kg dumbbells. 12kg weights build muscle well for beginners and intermediate-level lifters on some of the fundamental 'compound' exercises, including bench press and one-arm rows. For bicep curls and shoulder press, using 12kg is a good intermediate-level weight for men, and an advanced weight for most women. For muscle growth, most PTs will recommend aiming for 6-15 reps per set/exercise. If you can perform 15 reps with good technique and a controlled tempo, then consider increasing the weight to 13kg or 14kg on the next set, or in the following workout. For lateral raises, front raises and tricep kickbacks and skull-crushers, 12kg is a heavy weight that should only be attempted by advanced lifters. Isolation exercises such as lateral raises tend to be done at a controlled pace, with a focus on form/technique and targeting a specific muscle or muscle group with a higher rep range (usually 10-15 reps). For this reason and to help avoid injuries, always warm up and build up from lighter dumbbells before going above 10kg. Progressive overload is one of the key drivers of strength and muscle growth. With this in mind, adding reps, sets, and slightly increasing the weight month by month should result in genuine muscle size and strength increases. Resistance bands looped around the handle can add load where 12kg starts to feel easy on a given exercise. Most lifters will also have other weights available to ensure that each muscle group and exercise is equally as taxing within a given rep range. A typical set for a home gym might be a 6kg, 12kg, and 20kg pair of dumbbells, plus a thin resistance band.
Are 12kg dumbbells good for beginners?+
For some exercises, yes, and for others 12kg is a weight to progress toward. On compound lifts that use large muscle groups, including dumbbell squats, bench press, and bent-over rows, 12kg can be a good working weight for a beginner who has already learned the movement with something lighter. For isolation exercises that work smaller muscles, such as lateral raises and front raises, 12kg is often too heavy for a male or female beginner to use with strict form. It is generally better to go lighter on isolation exercises like curls, kickbacks and lateral raises, as a lighter dumbbell will allow better technique and help to avoid injury. As strength and technique improve, 12kg becomes a useful all-round weight across more exercises. For example, 12kg is a good intermediate weight for a man to attempt after a few months of consistent training, having built up from lighter dumbbells.
Are 12kg dumbbells heavy?+
Whether or not 12kg is heavy depends on the exercise and the individual's experience level. 12kg dumbbells are light to moderate in terms of what's available in a commercial gym (usually 1kg to 50kg). On compound lifts like bench press, rows and goblet squats, 12kg is manageable for most adults and well suited to male beginners and higher-rep work. The average woman would typically start with 7kg-10kg on bench press, rows and goblet squats - but everyone is different. On isolation exercises such as lateral raises, rear delt flyes and front raises, 12kg is challenging for almost all lifters. This is because the muscles doing the work are relatively small and tire quickly. It is not a heavy dumbbell by gym standards, but it is a useful mid-weight that earns its place in most home and commercial setups.
