6kg dumbbells at Net World Sports come in two main styles. Soft neoprene hex dumbbells offer good value and a floor-friendly coating. Our neoprene dumbbells are also colour-coded and soft to the touch. We also have a range of dumbbells, including 6kg in professional-quality hardened chrome. Designed for commercial gyms and PT studios, they are extremely hard wearing and have a specialised coating to help prevent scratches. Sold in pairs, 6kg weights suit lifters looking to develop or maintain a basic level of strength without adding significant muscle mass. They are a popular weight for women looking to tone muscle or maintain muscle mass. Men commonly use them for isolation/single joint exercises, like lateral raises, and higher rep sets of bicep curls. Advanced lifters may also use 6kg dumbbells for warm ups and some mobility & stability-style exercises, including single-leg Romanian deadlifts. Like all dumbbells, they are versatile, and they can be used as part of a circuit. Whilst they are generally considered 'light' for chest press and one-arm rows, they can provide significant resistance for jumping squats, lunges and Bulgarian split squats.
Whether or not 6kg dumbbells can build muscle will depend largely on what exercises they are used for and the 'starting level' of the user. As part of a full body weightlifting programme, 6kg can certainly be used for single joint "isolation" exercises that target/use smaller muscle groups. For example, lateral raises, front raises and most tricep exercises are all relatively difficult with a 6kg dumbbell. In addition, some leg exercises, which can be quite challenging without additional weight, like Bulgarian split squats, jumping squats and lunges, can certainly build muscle when using 6kg dumbbells. Intermediate and advanced male lifters would generally be looking at 20kg or heavier for compound upper body exercises however, for example, bench press and one-arm rows. If possible, buy a 6kg dumbbell with at least 1 additional weight or a thin resistance band, to allow you to progress and work through a range of exercises with a challenging amount of weight. Thin, looped resistance bands can be tied to dumbbell handles for additional resistance/load. We always recommend beginners seek guidance from a PT for safety, and to learn proper technique on each exercise.
Are 6kg dumbbells good for beginners (female)?+
6kg dumbbells are a sensible starting point for women for curls, dumbbell squats and standing shoulder presses. They may initially be a little too heavy for isolation exercises on the shoulders and arms. These exercises include lateral raises, front raises, bicep curls and tricep kickbacks - tend to be more difficult and require a lighter weight as the movement and exercise utilises smaller muscle groups. 6kg is also a popular weight in HIIT, Pilates reformer with weights and bootcamp-style sessions. For compound lifts - lifts using large groups of muscles, aimed at building muscle- many will want to consider using heavier dumbbells and women will typically start with, for example, a dumbbell bench press weight of between 7kg-10kg. Having a set of 2 or 3 dumbbells of various weights is always a good idea for a workout that involves exercises for the entire body.
Is a 6kg dumbbell heavy?+
6kg is light for compound lifts, moderate for most isolation work, and genuinely challenging for small-muscle exercises including tricep kickbacks and lateral raises. On exercises like dumbbell rows, chest press, and shoulder press, 6kg sits below the stimulus most adults need to build significant strength. On bicep curls, 6kg is a reasonable starting weight for beginners, and will become too light for most lifters within a few weeks of consistent training. On lateral raises, rear delt flyes and external rotations, 6kg is a challenging weight for many experienced lifters. This is because the muscles doing the work are small and fatigue quickly. It is not a heavy dumbbell by gym standards, but it is a useful one for warm ups, technique work, mobility exercises and isolation exercises. For rehab exercises, like rotator cuff (shoulder) exercises, 6kg is actually too heavy for a typical starting weight - patients often start with 1kg and work up to 2.5kg or 3kg. Always seek professional advice if you have a shoulder injury.
