Corner Flags Buying Guide: Sizes, Rules & Expert Tips
Corner Flag Types, Dimensions, Shapes & More
Whether you're in charge of setting up the pitch for a Sunday league team, or you are the groundsman at a Premier League club, using the right corner flags will help ensure visibility, safety and FA-compliance.
Rugby and football corner flags may look simple, but like all sports equipment, the design and manufacturing process is complex. Choosing which corner flags to buy can also be tricky, with so many options available, choosing the right design can be confusing. Like all matchday equipment, choosing the right corner flags can make a significant difference; particularly when it comes to player safety.
Used to mark the field of play, no football or rugby pitch looks complete without corner flags. More importantly perhaps, senior level football, rugby and GAA games can't take place under FA, RFL, World GAA or RFU regulations without them. High-quality flags meet regulations set out by the sport's governing bodies, are visible in all weather and are safe and unlikely to cause injury when players collide with them during a match. They should be easy to set up, and difficult to knock down during normal play and blustery weather.
What is a corner flag for?
At its simplest, a corner flag is a marker placed at each of the four corners of a pitch. In football, they help define the field of play and are required for matches under the official FA Laws of the Game.
In rugby, corner flags are positioned where the goal line and touchline meet - signalling the edges of the in-goal area. The in-goal area in rugby is the area between the tryline and the dead ball line. For more information about rugby pitches, see our guide.
Corner flags are used to:
-
Define the field of play and touchline area
-
Indicate where the ball is in or out of play
-
Help referees and players judge corners, goal kicks, and line-outs
-
Improve pitch visibility and safety
While they might rarely make the headlines (except for the odd goal celebration), a missing or broken corner flag can stop a match before it even starts.

With this in mind, it's important that officials and volunteers involved with grassroots football, opt for high-quality corner flags that are both safe and reliable. With this in mind, the materials and construction quality of each corner flag can be vitally important. Cheaper, poorly designed corner flags can be a safety hazard.
Corner Flag Materials & Construction
As outlined above, the design, materials and construction-quality of a given set of corner flags can make them safe and practical, or in some cases with lower-quality flags - they can be a safety hazard.
When purchasing corner flags, look for durable, weatherproof materials that are designed for long-term use.
-
Poles: Reinforced PVC or fibreglass
-
Flags: Polyester or nylon for fade resistance
-
Bases: Heavy duty rubber for safety & stability
Quality corner flags should resist strong winds and maintain visibility under all conditions.
Types of Corner Flags
Not all corner flags are the same, and some corner flags are designed for specific pitch types. For example, corner flags with weighted-bases are ideal for 3G pitch and indoor use. When buying corner flags for your club/team, consider the pitch surface type, your budget and level of play; and for safety ensure that you source corner flags from a reputable brand that uses safe and durable materials.
The table below outlines the different fundamental types of corner flags.
| Corner Flag Types — Pros & Uses | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | How it Works | Pros | Best For |
| Spring-Loaded Corner Flags | Flexible spring at the base absorbs impact and returns the pole upright. | Safety at speed; reduces breakage; stable in wind. | Professional & competitive football; first-team pitches. |
| Fixed Ground Spike | Steel or plastic spike anchors directly into natural grass. | Simple, light, fast to set; cost-effective. | Grassroots, schools, training areas on grass. |
| Weighted Base | Heavy rubber or plastic base keeps pole upright on hard or synthetic surfaces. | No ground penetration; highly portable; year-round indoor/outdoor use. | 3G/4G, MUGAs, indoor sports halls. |
| Collapsible / Two-Piece | Poles split or fold; store in carry bag. | Easy transport; space-saving; quick replacements. | Academies, travelling teams, shared facilities. |
How many corner flags do you need?
A standard football pitch uses four corner flags, one at each corner. This is the same for all full-size adult pitches and scaled-down youth pitches played at all levels under the FA ruleset. Some facility and pitch managers, may also choose to add halfway-line flags along the touchlines — often called touchline flags — but these are optional rather than essential.
In rugby union, there are typically 14 flags on the pitch. These include 4 corner flags where the try lines meet the touchlines, 4 flags where the dead-ball lines meet touchlines, and 6 flags positioned in line with the halfway line and 22-metre lines, 2 meters outside the touchlines within the playing enclosure.
The ruleset from World Rugby states that:
There are 14 flag posts with flags, each with a minimum height of 1.2 metres.
The rules regarding Rugby League, including the pitch specifications, are set by the International Rugby League (IRL), the global governing body, and the Rugby Football League (RFL). Rugby League pitches require only 4 flags, in each corner where the try lines meet the touchlines.

How tall are corner flags?
In football, the rules are clearly set out in the Laws of the Game: corner flags must stand at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) tall. This ensures they’re clearly visible to players, officials and spectators. This also mitigates the risk of injury from players and officials tripping or landing on shorter posts. Rugby corner flags follow similar guidelines. Whilst the official rules state the flags must be 1.2 metres tall (3ft 11 inches) usually sitting between 1.4 and 1.6 metres (4ft 7 inches and 5ft 3 inches) in height. When comparing products, check the height listed — anything shorter than regulation could be flagged (literally) by match officials.
The table below contains all the information in regards to corner flags official dimensions and other features required for FA and UEFA compliance.
| Corner Flag Dimensions & Compliance | ||
|---|---|---|
| Specification | Requirement | Notes |
| Height | Minimum 1.5 m (5 ft) | Standard for FA/FIFA matches; taller improves visibility in crowds. |
| Flag Panel | ~30 × 30 cm square | Choose UV-stable polyester for colour fastness. |
| Pole | Flexible (PVC/fibreglass) | Rounded, non-pointed tops for safety. |
| Base | Spike, spring, or weighted | Match base to the surface (see next table). |
Always check league handbook for any local variations to corner flag rules.
Corner Flag Rules & Positions Across Different Sports
Sharing a similar purpose of marking boundaries and sections of the pitch, corner flags are not just for football. They are also an important part of pitch equipment for rugby union, rugby league and Gaelic Football & Hurling. Although their positioning and function varies slightly between sports, understanding these small differences will ensure that the equipment you choose meets regulation rules and specifications. Using the right corner flags, positioned in the right places, will ensure compliance and give a professional feel to your pitch or ground.
In football, four corner flags mark the boundaries of play and the intersection between the goal line and the touchline. In rugby union, while technically speaking not all flags are corner flags, a regulation pitch uses 14 flags. Four of these are placed in the corners of the pitch, with the remaining flags used to mark critical points of the pitch, including for example, the 22 metre line and half way line.
In rugby league, only four flags are used, similar to football, with one in each corner. Unlike football corner flags, flags used in rugby are sometimes spring-loaded and/or padded, to protect players who frequently dive into the corners in an effort to ground the ball for a try. In GAA (Gaelic football and hurling), four corner flags are also used.
The table below outlines how corner flags are used in different sports.
| Corner Flag Requirements by Sport | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sport | Number of Flags / Posts | Positioning | Height / Specification | Notes & Best Practice |
| Football Corner Flags | 4 | One at each of the four corners of the field of play. | Minimum 1.5 m (5 ft); flexible, non-pointed pole with ~30×30 cm flag. | Optional halfway-line flags can be placed ≥1 m off the touchline. Weighted bases are ideal for 3G/4G and indoor surfaces. |
| Rugby Union Flags | 14 (4 corner + 10 touchline) | Corner posts at goal line and touch-in-goal intersections; additional flags positioned at the 22 m lines and halfway line (both sides). | Flexible or padded poles; rounded or cushioned tops for player safety. | Wingers often dive into the corners to score; posts should flex or use padding to prevent injury. Durable construction for all-weather use. |
| Rugby League Corner Flags | 4 | At each corner where the goal line meets the touch-in-goal line. | Flexible or spring-mounted posts; rounded top, no sharp fittings. | Frequently contacted during try-scoring dives — especially by wingers. Padded or spring-based designs minimise impact risk and meet RFL safety guidance. |
| GAA Corner Flags | 4 (4 corner + 12-18 touchline) | One at each corner of the pitch. | Approx. 1.5 m tall; durable, flexible pole with brightly coloured flag. | Separate white and green umpire flags are used for scoring signals. Corner flags mark pitch limits only. |
Information reflects common competition standards. Always confirm specifications in current FA, RFU, RFL, or GAA rulebooks before purchase.
