FUTSAL BALL SIZE GUIDE
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FUTSAL BALLS
Futsal is a fast-paced indoor football game played between two teams of five players. Unlike traditional football that is played outdoors on grass pitches, futsal is played on a smaller indoor court with a specialist, lower-bounce ball and regulated sized futsal goals. The smaller playing area and unique ball create a more intense and skill-based game, with a focus on quick passing, dribbling, and scoring goals in a confined space.
One of the key aspects of futsal is the ball used in matches. If you are in the market to buy a new futsal ball, then you have come to the right place. This comprehensive guide will tell you what size futsal ball you need based on a players age and provide some insight into the key differences which distinguish them from regular footballs.
What’s the difference between futsal balls and footballs?
Whilst futsal and football both share many of the same principles in terms of how the game is played, there are key differences between futsal and football balls which mean the two are quite different.
- Ball size - Let’s start with the most noticeable aspect, size. Futsal balls are smaller than standard sized footballs. Size 5 footballs are used by senior players and these balls have a circumference of 68-70cm. Futsal balls for senior players are size 4 and they have a circumference of 62-64 cm, meaning they are roughly 10% smaller than size 5 footballs.
- Weight – Even though futsal balls are smaller than footballs they are typically as heavy if not heavier than size 5 footballs (size 5 footballs typically weigh between 410-450g and size 4 futsal balls weigh between 400-440g). The reason for this is that the added weight means the balls are better suited to the indoor gameplay of futsal which requires close control and precision from players.
- Bounce – Another key aspect of the futsal ball which makes it differ from a standard football is the reduced bounce. With the added weight of the ball and the smaller size, the ball doesn’t bounce as much which helps players control the ball and keep it close to the ground and within the smaller indoor pitch.
Futsal ball sizes by age - what size futsal ball do you need?
As mentioned earlier, futsal balls are a lot smaller than standard footballs, but they still come in a variety of sizes. Standard futsal balls are typically size 4 but you can get them in a size 2 and 3 for younger players.
Size 4 balls are used by senior players and kids over 13 years old. This is the case in all competitive games/tournaments, and we therefore recommend players use this size futsal ball recreationally too to get used to using a size 4 ball. Size 3 futsal balls are for children aged between 8 and 12, whilst size 2 futsal balls are for children aged 7 and under.
