If you’re looking to buy hockey goals for a school or club it’s important to make sure you buy goals that are regulation size. Hockey goals used in competitive games must meet regulation hockey goal dimensions to ensure that they comply with FIH regulations. With this in mind, we've created an illustrated hockey goal size guide, to make choosing and buying a goal that little bit easier.

How big is a regulation hockey goal?

The regulation width of a hockey goal is 3.66m (12ft) and the regulation height is 2.14m (7ft). Regulation hockey goals are measured inside the posts, so these dimensions do not include the width or diameter of the goal posts/frame.

Field hockey goals should also have backboards that are 46cm (18.4 inches) high. The minimum depth of a goal should be 1.2m (3.94ft) at the bottom, and 0.9m (2.95ft) at the top.

What are the dimensions of a field hockey net?

There isn’t actually a regulation size field hockey net, as some nets fit and attach to the top of the backboard, whilst others attach to the bottom of the goal. As long as the nets fit a regulation goal correctly and provides a depth of at least 1.2m at the bottom and 0.9m at the top, they are suitable for FIH approved hockey goals.

Due to the above, field hockey net dimensions can vary slightly. Regardless of the make/model of a goal, nets will pretty much always be 3.66m (12ft) wide with a 1.22m (4ft) depth. Where nets vary is with the height, which depends on where the net fixes to. If the net attaches to the goal base it will usually be 2.14m (7ft), if it attaches to the backboard the height will normally be 1.71m (5.6ft).
